Mustakshif Shariah Board Rulings on Butter

According to Mustakshif Shariah Board, butter is considered Halal as it is produced from the milk of halal animals (like cows), and no non-halal additives are involved. If rennet or other enzymes are added, their source must also be halal.

Some processed butter or butter blends may contain emulsifiers or flavourings from doubtful origins. These versions need ingredient verification.

Halal rulings related to the butter

Scholars have confirmed that plain, unsalted butter from halal animals is permissible. The Darul Ifta of India and the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) affirm its permissibility unless mixed with doubtful enzymes or alcohol-based flavourings.

Consumers are advised to read labels or seek clarification from manufacturers if they are unsure about the additives.

Ingredient overview

Butter is a widely used dairy product made from the fat and protein components of milk or cream. It’s creamy, rich in fat, and often used as a spread on bread or in cooking and baking. This ingredient is also identified by various terms such as butterfat, churned cream, dairy butter, and sweet cream butter.

How is it extracted?

Butter is an animal-based dairy product produced by churning the cream of cow’s milk. This process separates the milk fat from the liquid, resulting in a solid (butter) and a by-product known as buttermilk.

Some butter may be salted or fermented, but the base process remains the same. Butter is typically free from additives, though commercial versions may include colourings or preservatives.

Function of butter in food production

Butter is a go-to ingredient in the kitchen. It’s great for cooking, baking, and making sauces tastier. In baked treats, it helps make things flaky and full of flavor. Some traditional recipes even use butter to preserve food by creating a layer of fat. It’s also used to give food a shiny finish or to make processed foods richer.
